🧭EXPLORE SOUTHERN UTAH
The Vortex, or is it The Bowl?
The trail head is named: Lower Sand Cave Trail Head.
Don’t worry, we were a little confused too but had no trouble finding the trailhead. Just be prepared for a nice country drive to get there. Also, be sure to download the trail map before you get going. We use the All Trails app for this, but you can even go old school and print a map and keep it in your pocket. It’s not long after you get started the trial kind of disappears and you are on your own.
Exploring the inverted cone is absolutely worth the adventure of light rock scrambling to get there. We explored The Vortex with our adventure buddy: Lahrs with Lattitude and we both recommend putting this one on your list.
The cone was dry when we went. However, we hear often that it is filled with water. The kids climbed in and out of it fine and had a blast doing so (while we watched from the top). The views from the top are stunning!
👣Is this one a good barefoot hike? The first part of the trail is a bit rocky with little volcanic pebbles, but after that, it is smooth sailing if you are a barefoot hiker like our crew. We happened to have an overcast sky cover us during our hike. I can only imagine that full sun would heat the rocks and not recommend going barefoot.
🔆 There is no shade on this hike, so be sure to time this as an early morning adventure in the summer, or make a plan for a winter hike.
The Mystical Vortex: As you approach The Bowl, you may start to feel a subtle shift in energy. Many hikers believe that this area possesses a mystical vortex, a place where the Earth’s energy is amplified, creating a sense of tranquility and spiritual connection. Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, there’s no denying the profound sense of awe that envelops The Bowl.
