Getting to Know Dementia – Hurricane
Part 1: What is Dementia, Really?– this course discusses what is typical versus atypical aging. When memory starts to fail us, our “go to” is that is must be dementia. We discuss what other factors that could influence memory loss in addition to dementia.
Part 2: What Brain Changes and Shifts in Ability are Noticed When Dementia Happens?
We discuss the brain changes related to dementia and how it can influence behaviors.
Part 3: Seeing More than Loss: The GEMS® State Model
This is an introduction of how brain changes influence daily actions and behaviors. The progression of symptoms is explained in an easy-to-understand model to help caregivers navigating the dementia journey.
Part 4: The GEMS® State Model: In the Right Setting with the Right Care, all GEMS Can Shine
We will highlight ways in which the care partner’s approach can influence the person living with dementia. By changing the approach, we can create positive relationships.
Part 5: New Skills for Supporting and Building a Support Team
We will focus on learning and practicing skills to create positive relationships with persons living with dementia. How can caregivers have more balance in their lives while caring for those living with dementia.
Students may select the weeks they wish to attend.
